A former support worker at the Council for Aboriginal Alcohol Program Services has been released from jail after pleading guilty to a brutal attack on his pregnant partner. The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in the dock of the Darwin Local Court last month and pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, after prosecutors withdrew the additional charge of damage to property. The court heard the man had been out drinking all day and arrived home and found himself locked out in January. He kicked down the front door of his house and, after the couple’s children left the room, began pushing his partner and then punched her multiple times to the face. She then ran out the back door and he followed, pushing her to the ground and then kicking her in the face and torso. He then punched her several more times and she tried to crawl away before she eventually escaped to call for help. The offender was then arrested and remanded in custody from January 1. The court heard the man found out afterwards that his partner was pregnant at the time of the attack. The offender was sentenced to six months’ jail, suspended immediately and a 12-month domestic violence order.
